Solar panels aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. Before you install a single one, you need to figure out if your roof is even worth it.
First, check your roof's condition. Is it old? Leaky? You might need a replacement before anything else. Shade matters too. Trees, chimneys, even a neighbor's tall building can kill your system's output.
Next, dig into your power bills. How much electricity do you actually use? Look at the past year. That number decides how many panels you need. Don't guess.
You also need to know your local weather. Lots of sun? Great. Cloudy winters? You'll need more panels to compensate.
Finally, think about your goals. Cutting bills? Going green? Backup power? Each goal changes the system design.
Skip this homework, and you might end up with panels that don't pay off.
