Solar Energy Efficiency Breakthrough: New Technology Pushes Conversion Rates Past 30%
A solar panel just broke the 30% efficiency mark. That's a huge deal. For decades, 30% was the wall. Nobody cracked it. Now a team did. They stacked two different materials on top of each other. One grabs visible light. The other grabs infrared. More light. More power. Standard panels sit around 22%. This one hits 30.1%. That extra 8% might not sound like much. But scale it up. Across a solar farm? That's millions more kilowatt-hours. The trick is the stacking. Silicon on the bottom. A perovskite layer on top. Perovskite is the new kid. Cheap to make. Great at absorbing light. The combo is called a tandem cell. The old record was 29.8%. Stuck there for years. This new result came from researchers in Germany. They published it in *Science*. Commercial production is still years away. These cells are fragile. They degrade fast. But the physics works. The barrier is broken. Now the race is to make them last. And to make them cheap. If they do, solar power just got a serious upgrade.
