Recycling Breakthrough: 99% of Solar Panel Materials Now Recoverable

Circular Solar Economy

A breakthrough solar panel recycling process developed by researchers at Fraunhofer ISE enables recovery of 99% of materials from end-of-life solar panels, including high-purity silicon, silver, glass, and aluminum. The thermal delamination process separates layers without crushing, preserving material quality for reuse in new panels.

With the first generation of mass-deployed solar panels now reaching end-of-life, the recycling industry is projected to grow to $15 billion annually by 2035, creating a truly circular solar economy.
