Mounting System Overview
The mounting structure accounts for 8-15% of total PV system cost but is critical for long-term durability. It must withstand 25+ years of wind, snow, seismic, and thermal cycling.
Six Major Typologies
- Fixed-Tilt Ground Mount: Concrete foundation + steel structure. Tilt angle = latitude for max annual yield.
- Ballasted Roof Mount: No roof penetration. Concrete blocks hold the structure. Suitable for flat commercial roofs.
- Penetrating Roof Mount: Rail-based system anchored to roof structure. For pitched residential roofs.
- Single-Axis Tracker: Follows sun east-to-west. Boosts yield by 20-30% vs fixed-tilt.
- Dual-Axis Tracker: Follows both azimuth and elevation. 35-45% yield gain. Higher cost and maintenance.
- Floating PV: Panels on floating pontoons over water bodies. Reduces land use, cools panels for higher efficiency.
